I did a quick research on the situation in Rwanda during the massacre and there is one thing that still remains in my head is 800,000. The fact that this is the number of deaths during this genocide made me to realize the significance of a number in such dark side. As it has been mentioned, Genocide in Rwanda has killed approximately 800,000 people within a few months.
There are several reasons behind this massacre, but one thing is clear; this event has to do with discrimination. In fact, discrimination created from another country that ruled over Rwanda.
If you remember the scene where the journalist asks some questions to two women in the bar of Hotel (one Hutu and one Tutsi), there was no clear distinction between those women as the journalist noticed. This once again proved that this massacre this not have any other purpose than a revenge towards the discrimination in the past.
I have not found specific media that have affected this genocide during it happened. This will kind of make sense when you ask this question to some people near you “do you know what Genocide in Rwanda is”? In my case, most of them did not know what it was about but heard the name Rwanda it once or several times. And if there are some people who know what happened in Rwanda at that time are the ones who certainly have watched the movie Hotel Rwanda. As you can see there wasn’t any specifically influential media that noticed the situation in Rwanda at the time it occurred or is there any other reason? According to one of the reporter who has been interviewed, there were media that tried to inform the situation in Rwanda but no one did really care because it was something that had to do with Africans. I thought his answer was very irresponsible but in a way understandable. His answer made sense to me since this genocide started from discrimination also.
However, one thing we should make clear is that there should be no discrimination in helping. We put enough money, time and people to help stop the butchery wither it is for black or white. So what is the reason to make a difference in giving aids?
As a lot of people did notice, Hotel Rwanda is probably the only recognizable medium that informed about the situation in Rwanda, even though it was far after the end of massacre. At least it has informed about Rwanda, which a lot of reporters and cameras have failed to do at that moment.
The efficiency of media really depends on a lot of things such as time, place, style and ethnic groups.
